Behaviour Management

Behavioural issues can be stressful — not just for your pet, but for you as well. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, reactivity, aggression, or something that just doesn't feel quite right, I offer in-home behavioural consultations designed to help you understand your pet’s behaviour and create a practical, compassionate plan to manage it.

I take a calm, evidence-based approach to behaviour management, working with you to identify the root cause of the issue rather than just treating the symptoms. Every consultation is tailored to your pet’s unique needs, environment, and history.

If I ever feel that your pet’s case is outside the scope of my expertise, I will always be upfront and discuss appropriate options for referral to ensure you get the most effective support possible.

Common Behavioural Concerns I Can Help With:

  • Anxiety – including separation anxiety, noise phobias (e.g. storms, fireworks), and generalised anxiety

  • Aggression – toward people or other animals, whether triggered by fear, territory, or pain

  • Reactivity – excessive barking, lunging, or over-excitement on walks or around guests

  • Resource Guarding – growling or snapping when approached near food, toys, or resting spaces

  • House Soiling – toileting in inappropriate places, often linked to stress or medical issues

  • Overgrooming or Compulsive Behaviours – repetitive behaviours that may indicate distress

What to Expect from a Behaviour Consultation

Behaviour doesn’t happen in isolation — it’s influenced by your pet’s health, environment, history, and emotional state. That’s why I take a holistic approach to each case.

During your consultation, I will:

  • Take a full behavioural history, including any recent changes or triggers

  • Assess your pet in their home environment

  • Consider any underlying medical causes or pain that might be contributing

  • Work with you to create a clear, personalised plan that’s realistic and focused on long-term success

Booking Your Behaviour Consultation

Because behavioural issues often require extra time and planning, I ask that you complete a Behaviour Consultation Form before your appointment. This helps me prepare and ensures we make the most of our session together.

FAQ

  • If your pet is showing signs of anxiety, aggression, or any behaviour that’s interfering with their wellbeing or your daily life, it’s worth getting in touch. Even mild behaviours can escalate over time if left unaddressed.

I’m happy to have a quick chat first if you’re unsure whether a full consultation is needed.

  • I work with a wide range of behavioural concerns including anxiety, reactivity, and aggression. In more complex or high-risk cases, I may recommend working alongside a veterinary behaviourist, and I’m happy to refer you to trusted colleagues if needed.

  • Not always. Many behaviour concerns can be managed with environmental changes, training, and supportive care.

However, in some cases, medication can be helpful — especially for pets with severe anxiety or long-standing behavioural patterns. If medication is appropriate, I’ll discuss the options with you carefully and tailor the approach to your pet.

  • The form gives me a detailed picture of your pet’s behaviour, history, and environment before I arrive. This helps us get straight into the core issues during your consultation and ensures I’m fully prepared to support you.
